Kaidan shook his head, echoing wry smile still on his face. "Allie? Watch those big doors down there. Dean? You think you can convince the guys on the other side of the com-- walkie talkie that we're some of theirs, the evil Alliance types are dead and we want across?"

Playing with walkie-talkies... )

The hangar doors had barely shut tight behind Shepard when the barrage of questions began. Vega stalked after him, barking one out after the other. "What the hell's going on? Where's Anderson? Where are we going?"

Shepard ignored him. They had bigger things going on right now. He moved across the shuttle deck fast, going for the consoles.

"Hey!" Vega snapped after him.

For fuck's sake.

Shepard looked over his shoulder. "We're leaving," he said flatly.

"Leaving?!" Vega shrieked.

No, seriously. They didn't have time for this. Shepard's fingers found the console and he tapped the buttons required to start setting up their armor, the ships... everything. They needed to be ready.

And it just keeps on going downhill... )

The weather wasn't too bad in Vancouver this time of year. A lot of rain, sure, but also decent temperatures. Kaidan had been staying places too classified to mention for too long; the breeze alone had put him in a good mood. Though... that might've also been the part where resurfacing like this meant he had a one-shot chance to talk to some old friends.

... No, not that friend. The friend - if Kaidan could call him that - currently incarcerated nearby... yeah, he wasn't sure he knew how to handle that. Especially not after that stunt with that Batarian colony recently-- damn, that one.

But he wasn't here for that, anyway. He was here to brief the Admiralty about the Reapers - which he'd just done. They'd been getting strange readings not too far from Earth itself. Well out in the outer rim, but enough to make everyone a little nervous. Even Kaidan, if he was going to be entirely honest. Just... not nervous enough that he didn't want the slight indulgence of seeing his friends.

He pushed through the door leading out of the Admiralty offices, his eyes immediately searching for three distinct faces among the crowd.

Will something go wrong? Of course. )

Kaidan was starting to get his feet back under him. Didn't mean he was going to pass on an invitation to go drinking with Dean, though - but maybe he wasn't going to order any of the hard stuff this time.

Maybe. He was still making his mind up.

"I'll get the drinks," he said. "What do you want?"

The fight had been grueling. Shepard could barely feel his arms, and he was bleeding from at least two separate wounds. Nothing fatal, though. He took a moment to catch his breath, then peered up over the edge of the crate he'd been using for cover. Were there any other Collectors inbound--?

But he caught no hostiles. Instead, the giant Collector ship that had practically embedded itself in the planet pulled itself free from the ground, blasting scorching fire down onto its landing site as it propelled itself into the atmosphere.

His earpiece took that as a perfect time to come alive. "They're pulling out!" Miranda bellowed across the comms. Another blast from the ship's engines sent him wincing, ducking and grabbing for his ears as the noise drowned out everything else. Shit. Shit. Shit shit shit.

The defense towers flared to life, twisting over and firing repeated volleys into the enormous ship. It was futile: like flinging rocks at a tank. "They wanted the colonists and they got them," Miranda reported.

Reports of his death were greatly exaggerated. Oops. )

Horizon's sun slipped low above its many prefab structures as dusk began to settle. Its rays were only partly blocked by the enormous defense towers that Kaidan had been sent here to set up; it was in that direction that he glanced, automatically, as he stepped out of the confines of his temporary home.

Having Allie and the guys over definitely made things more cramped, but he couldn't find it in him to complain. Being here wasn't a great deal of fun - not just because the calibration of the defense towers wasn't working out, but also because the locals... yeah. People out here, they didn't like the Alliance, and that was before any biases against biotics came into the picture.

It was... nice, just to spend time with people who didn't hate his guts.

So there was real resignation in Kaidan's voice when he said, "You'll have to amuse yourselves tonight. I need to meet with Lilith, see if she can help me get through some of these numbers that aren't matching up."

Does shit hit the fan? Of course it does. )

There'd been weird noises coming out of the woods this morning. Kaidan had cut short his morning jog because of it-- this wasn't just the loud drilling of machines, but it sounded like some kind of... monster, almost. A tiger? A lion? Something like that.

So he'd done the only sane thing he could - he'd fallen back, gotten his guns, and placed a call to someone who could back him up.

That brought them back here, by the edge of the woods.

"I should've brought a shotgun," Kaidan muttered.

"Okay," Kaidan said. "So... Washington."

Yes, Kaidan. Washington.

"Is at least an hour's drive away from here," he continued. "Man. I knew vehicles in this day and age were slow, but I didn't know the problem was that mad. I mean, that's what... sixty kilometers? Come on."

Another beat.

"I have the hotel voucher, right? ... Damn it. Are we on the road already? I need to go find my voucher--"

Welcome to driving long distances with Kaidan, Dean.

Kaidan... wasn't really the kind of guy who felt completely comfortable chaperoning a high school dance. He did it, because he saw it as part of the job, but... that was about it.

So in order to steel himself for the night, he'd let Dean wheedle him into invited Dean over for a movie afternoon before the dance started. Some terrible sci-fi movie from two hundred years ago that he'd gotten for cheap on the extranet, after Dean had asked about it.

He opened the fridge to hunt down a couple of bottles of root beer (chaperoning tonight) and set them down on the coffee table. Okay. Movie. Drinks. Now it was time for--

"Crap, I should've gotten snacks."

Social occasions. Sigh.

[[ for Dean, but can also be open to housemates! ]]
not_a_whiner: (kaidan: hm.)
Kaidan had been a little skeptical the first time Dean had suggested a bar crawl.

He'd still been skeptical the second time around, but he'd been dealing with Weird Fandom Weekend hangover at the time, so you couldn't really fault him for caving.

Unfortunately, caving meant taking a seat in the Impala while Dean drove, which meant that right now Kaidan's skeptical meter was soaring through the roof and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. "I think we're almost there," he said pointedly, keeping his sanity mostly through judicious application of years of Mako experience.
