... Yep, that email had definitely been something Kaidan had sent. Maybe it'd been a bad idea. Maybe he should just keep it casual. Maybe...

... maybe he could really use the distraction of having Allie and Jack over today. He waited for them at a restaurant opposite the local Portalocity office, one of the few across the galaxy that still took traffic. Reapers were making it harder and harder, these days. He fiddled with his datapad the entire time, told the waiter he was fine twice, then finally ordered a cup of coffee.

Okay, so he was early. It was gonna be a day.

There was one thing you could always rely on, on the Citadel: life went on, even when invaders had stomped through it just hours ago, whether they be geth or Cerberus. They were still brushing up glass shards and blocking out bullet holes by moving planters around, here at the High Light, but the bar was open.

It wasn't as full as it would've been any other night, but there were still people coming in. Kaidan had to admire the guts of the Citadel's population, if nothing else.

The air was different, though. Until today, the locals had more or less assumed the Reaper War was something to be fought elsewhere, on different planets, well away from their safe haven. They had worried about family and friends back on their home planets, but they had thought themselves safe here.

That had changed. Kaidan could tell as much.

"This place isn't going to be the same," he said to Allie as he sank into a booth.

He wasn't sure whether he was going to be the same. He'd put a bullet in Udina's chest. That was gonna hang over him for a while.

[[ for allie. ]]

Looking at the Council chamber, it was hard to imagine that it hadn't been more than a couple of years since Shepard and Saren fought in this very room. Hadn't... been more than a couple of years since Shepard had stood here, going through the exact same thing Kaidan was right now.

Well, more or less. A lot of circumstances had changed. Nobody could deny the Reapers were real now, for one thing, and there were four councilors, not three, and his new position wasn't up for much debate. He sucked in a breath and cast a quick look towards the balcony where Allie was. Stupid nerves.

Councilor Udina practically glowed with pride as he spoke, drawing Kaidan's attention back to him. "Major Alenko, step forward," he said.

Kaidan stepped forward. No more time to be nervous. Now it was time to face the music.

"It is the decision of the Council that you be granted all the powers and privileges of the Special Tactics and Reconnaissance branch of the Citadel," said the asari councilor. She looked worried, not proud; the rest of them all did. Understandable, considering the circumstances. Kaidan wasn't exactly jubilant either.

Of course nothing goes as planned. )

Kaidan shook his head, echoing wry smile still on his face. "Allie? Watch those big doors down there. Dean? You think you can convince the guys on the other side of the com-- walkie talkie that we're some of theirs, the evil Alliance types are dead and we want across?"

The hangar doors had barely shut tight behind Shepard when the barrage of questions began. Vega stalked after him, barking one out after the other. "What the hell's going on? Where's Anderson? Where are we going?"

Shepard ignored him. They had bigger things going on right now. He moved across the shuttle deck fast, going for the consoles.

"Hey!" Vega snapped after him.

For fuck's sake.

Shepard looked over his shoulder. "We're leaving," he said flatly.

"Leaving?!" Vega shrieked.

No, seriously. They didn't have time for this. Shepard's fingers found the console and he tapped the buttons required to start setting up their armor, the ships... everything. They needed to be ready.

And it just keeps on going downhill... )

The weather wasn't too bad in Vancouver this time of year. A lot of rain, sure, but also decent temperatures. Kaidan had been staying places too classified to mention for too long; the breeze alone had put him in a good mood. Though... that might've also been the part where resurfacing like this meant he had a one-shot chance to talk to some old friends.

... No, not that friend. The friend - if Kaidan could call him that - currently incarcerated nearby... yeah, he wasn't sure he knew how to handle that. Especially not after that stunt with that Batarian colony recently-- damn, that one.

But he wasn't here for that, anyway. He was here to brief the Admiralty about the Reapers - which he'd just done. They'd been getting strange readings not too far from Earth itself. Well out in the outer rim, but enough to make everyone a little nervous. Even Kaidan, if he was going to be entirely honest. Just... not nervous enough that he didn't want the slight indulgence of seeing his friends.

He pushed through the door leading out of the Admiralty offices, his eyes immediately searching for three distinct faces among the crowd.

Will something go wrong? Of course. )

This weekend, Kaidan'd start his new job running the local Portalocity office. Today, he was going to make use of the downtime the Alliance had offered him to go home and spend some times with friends. Friends he was... bringing along, actually, because he didn't really have a lot of them left in Vancouver.

The inside of the space port had been pretty much the same as any airport terminal back home. It was stepping outside that might've been more impressive. Architecture had not stood still over time, and the giant skyscrapers and gleaming white surfaces of Vancouver, 2185 were not quite the same as the cities of 2014.

But it was home. And, because it was home, it was raining.

"Skycab should be here any minute."

The fight had been grueling. Shepard could barely feel his arms, and he was bleeding from at least two separate wounds. Nothing fatal, though. He took a moment to catch his breath, then peered up over the edge of the crate he'd been using for cover. Were there any other Collectors inbound--?

But he caught no hostiles. Instead, the giant Collector ship that had practically embedded itself in the planet pulled itself free from the ground, blasting scorching fire down onto its landing site as it propelled itself into the atmosphere.

His earpiece took that as a perfect time to come alive. "They're pulling out!" Miranda bellowed across the comms. Another blast from the ship's engines sent him wincing, ducking and grabbing for his ears as the noise drowned out everything else. Shit. Shit. Shit shit shit.

The defense towers flared to life, twisting over and firing repeated volleys into the enormous ship. It was futile: like flinging rocks at a tank. "They wanted the colonists and they got them," Miranda reported.

Reports of his death were greatly exaggerated. Oops. )

Horizon's sun slipped low above its many prefab structures as dusk began to settle. Its rays were only partly blocked by the enormous defense towers that Kaidan had been sent here to set up; it was in that direction that he glanced, automatically, as he stepped out of the confines of his temporary home.

Having Allie and the guys over definitely made things more cramped, but he couldn't find it in him to complain. Being here wasn't a great deal of fun - not just because the calibration of the defense towers wasn't working out, but also because the locals... yeah. People out here, they didn't like the Alliance, and that was before any biases against biotics came into the picture.

It was... nice, just to spend time with people who didn't hate his guts.

So there was real resignation in Kaidan's voice when he said, "You'll have to amuse yourselves tonight. I need to meet with Lilith, see if she can help me get through some of these numbers that aren't matching up."

Does shit hit the fan? Of course it does. )

The sun was coming down.

Kaidan shut the door to the basement quickly. He didn't want to attract any attention to their current position. He'd slept for a few hours in the early morning, but that was all he'd allowed himself. His nerves were tight with sleep deprivation now, but that was okay. He was used to worse.

He turned around and glanced over his shoulder, checking the corners. Allie on the left, Jackal on the right. Both of them seemed fine. At least, he thought they did. Vampires slept like the dead, who'd have known? He ran his fingers through his hair, yanking his hand away as soon as the static electricity nipped at his fingertips. "Okay," he muttered. It was dusk now. He could probably wake them up without running into any trouble.

He still didn't get too close; he didn't know what kind of reflexes they'd gotten ingrained in their heads. A couple of paces away, that seemed about right. "Allie? It's, uh, mor-- I mean, night. Wake up."

The suit was not necessarily something Kaidan felt terribly at home in, but he wore it well enough. The loudness of the casino was another thing, though, and he had no doubt this was eventually going to turn into a colossal migraine. Not yet, though. Right now, the main problem... would probably be keeping Allie and Jack from staring at the many elcor, hanar and volus patrons of the vorcha-run establishment.

He thought he'd even spotted a drell around somewhere.

"Okay," he said quietly to his companions. "Time to get this party on the road."

Okay, it wasn't that Kaidan didn't like seeing Anderson again. Because he did. The man had been a huge part of their story, and yet they hadn't spoken since Anderson helped them mutiny and break the Normandy out of dry dock - yeah, way too long. He just hadn't expected it'd wind up being a four hour meeting where the minutiae of an extremely boring mission were driven into the ground over and over again.

Which wasn't Anderson's fault; it was the salarian Councillor's. But, well.

It meant Kaidan was late.

He rushed through the lower streets of Portalocity's strip, dodging asari and turians and even a keeper or two, because of course because of the hush-hush nature of the portal system, there wasn't a skycar pad nearby. Sigh. Sigh.

He just hoped Allie and Jack hadn't gotten bored. Or wandered off. ...Well, okay, they probably weren't going to be going out picking fights with krogan, but... bored. Bored would be bad already. He didn't have enough friends to afford boring these... ones. It made sense in his head, okay?

In which nobody is bored, exactly... )
